The Hawthorn tree is a common and useful hedging plant used for enclosing livestock as it is sturdy and prickly. It is relatively fast growing as a hedge but it can grow in to a tree reaching 40ft in height, creating an attractive display in spring and autumn. It tolerates exposed, coastal and windy areas and clay soils though it thrives in all locations. The current height & quantity of trees is shown above. For hedging we would recommend planting 1 plant per 9 inches for a single row and 2 plants per 9 inches for a zig zag (belt and braces) double row.
