Japanese Larch will reach a maximum height of around 100ft (32m). Its branches are longer and thicker than those of the European larch, generally exhibiting coarser growth. The twigs are orange, in contrast to the more straw coloured European Larch. Japanese larch was introduced to Britain in 1861 and has proved particularly suited to the wetter western side of the country where its orange twigs colour the hillside in winter. The tree grows quickly and as its vigorous growth shades out vegetation and its wood smoulders rather than burns it is sometimes planted as a fire break between more inflammable conifers.
